The Réseau féministe québécois is proud to announce the submission of its thesis to the Parliamentary Institutions Commission of Quebec concerning the bill on the adoption of a Quebec Constitution.
Summary of the thesis
The RFQ welcomes the government's intention to adopt a Constitution affirming the historical, legal, and social particularities of Quebec — elements which, in our view, strengthen the enduring protection of women's rights.
Our brief specifically recommends:
- to clearly enshrine gender equality as a fundamental principle;
- to explicitly protect the right to abortion within the constitutional framework;
- to embed state secularism, essential for equality between women and men;
- to recognize the Quebec model of integration, distinct from Canadian multiculturalism;
- to add a right to dignity and personal integrity;
- to regulate the funding of organizations that would challenge constitutional foundations with public funds;
- and to adopt more stringent amendment procedures, in order to ensure the stability of fundamental rights.
In general, we see this project as a historic opportunity to clearly affirm Quebec's collective values and the constitutional protection of women's rights.
